phacoemulsification

What is Phaco- emulsification?
Phaco- emulsification is the technique by which cataract is liquefied and removed from inside the eye using a special equipment known as Phaco- emulsification unit. The actual cataract operation is carried out through a 1.8 to 2.8 mm incision with the help of a titanium needle vibrating at the rate of more than 40,000 times per second.

The Mirchia advantage of Phaco- emulsification
We at our centre were the first to start Phaco- emulsification in the region and have 20 years experience in this procedure. Presently the surgery is performed with one of the most advanced Phaco units such(alcon Infinite,Stellaris Btl,Oertelli )

What is the difference in the length of incision between Phaco and routine method of cataract operation?
ECCE cataract operation was carried out through an incision which is 8 to 10 mm in length through which first cataract is removed and then an intraocular lens is implanted. In Phaco- emulsification technique, cataract removal is done through 1.8 mm to 2.8 mm opening only

What is the difference between the number of stitches?
In the ECCE cataract surgery, 6 around 5 stitches are required for closure of the incision line. In Phaco- emulsification, a valve type of incision is made with the help of diamond blades and peratomes. This incision is self sealing in nature and usuallyl does not require any stitches. very rarely suturing may be required.

Benefits of Phaco surgery ?

  • No hospitalization – Walk in Walk out surgery.
  • Smaller incision- hence lesser complications related to the incision size.
  • Lesser induced astigmatism because of smaller incision.
  • No bandages minimal precautions.
  • No restriction on normal activities. Can join work from next morning and as early as same day.
  • Fast recovery of good vision in a matter of days.
  • Final spectacles at one or two weeks.
  • Early visual rehabilitation.

Will there be need to wear spectacles after Phaco- emulsification operation?
Yes. Although vision will be reasonably good without glasses, the patients needs to wear a small numbered glass for best corrected visual acuity and for reading.

What are the complications with the technique of Phaco- emulsification?
Essentially the types of complications with the routine method of cataract operation and Phaco- emulsification are similar but the problems related to the large incision in routine cataract surgery are much reduced.
