What is Phaco- emulsification meaning?
Phaco- emulsification is the technique by which cataract is liquefied and removed from inside the eye using a special equipment known as Phaco- emulsification unit. The actual cataract operation is carried out through a 1.8 to 2.8 mm incision with the help of a titanium needle vibrating at the rate of more than 40,000 times per second.

What is the difference in the length of incision between Phaco and routine method of cataract operation?
ECCE cataract operation was carried out through an incision which is 8 to 10 mm in length through which first cataract is removed and then an intraocular lens is implanted. In Phaco- emulsification cataract surgery , cataract removal is done through 1.8 mm to 2.8 mm opening only means due to less incision opening no stitches are generally required.
What is the difference between the number of stitches?
In the ECCE cataract surgery, 6 around 5 stitches are required for closure of the incision line. In Phaco- emulsification, a valve type of incision is made with the help of diamond blades and peratomes. This incision is self sealing in nature and usually does not require any stitches. very rarely suturing may be required.
